11 Natural Treatments for Joint Pain to Give a Try ...

There are many natural treatments for joint pain you can try if you don’t want to opt for an over the counter supplement. Typical over the counter treatments might work short term, but they merely bandage the symptoms, while also causing damage to your liver and other organs in the process. Many chemical-based over the counter remedies can also interfere with some medications if you’re on prescription drugs. For a more natural solution that can quell inflammation that leads to joint pain long term, consider some of these natural treatments for joint pain instead. Many are inexpensive, easy to find, and some are just down right delicious too!

1. Eat Omega 3’s

One of the best preventative natural treatments for joint pain that can also help with existing pain, is to eat more omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids have been proven to not only quell inflammation and joint pain, but prevent it from happening in the first place. As a bonus, omega 3 fatty acids also increase brain health, metabolism, and can aid in preventing depression and heart disease. Get your dosages daily from wild fish (especially Alaskan salmon), chia seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, and ground flax seeds. You can also opt to take a fish oil pill, but seek out mercury-free brands to prevent toxic contaminants.

2. Ginger Root

Ginger root is another powerful anti-inflammatory treatment you can use. Ginger contains compounds that halt current pain, along with help prevent pain. It is great for joint pain, headaches, indigestion, or an acidic stomach. You can purchase it as a pill, as a whole root and slice it into tea or food, or you can buy it as a tea as well. All are fairly effective and also very inexpensive.

3. Acupuncture

One non-food option you can try is acupuncture. It has a great reputation for being effective to treat joint pain, including arthritis and fibromyalgia related pain.

4. Glucosamine

Glucosamine is a natural supplement that many people use to treat osteoarthritis. It helps relieve inflammation and pain in the joints, and is also effective post-exercise. If you choose this option, choose glucosamine sulfate, which is most effective, not glucosamine hydrochloride. Both are natural remedies, but you still need to be sure to buy the most effective kind.

5. Wheatgrass

I know this one might not sound like the tastiest option, but it has been proven to relieve joint pain and all forms of inflammation. Wheatgrass is one of the most alkalizing foods on the planet, and in return, it can help quell a number of issues you might be suffering from. I suggest buying wheatgrass powder, which is more cost efficient than fresh, especially if you choose organic. If you want a good tasting version of wheatgrass, try the Amazing Grass brand. It’s the best tasting and cleanest I’ve ever had and one I use daily. Hint, hint- the Cacao Infusion flavor is to die for! All Amazing Grass wheatgrass products are organic, raw, gluten-free, vegan, and non-GMO as well. You can also opt for Amazing Grass wheatgrass tablets as well. You can find out about Amazing Grass here: iherb.com.

6. Exercise

Believe it or not, pure daily exercise can be a great treatment for joint pain. Many times, joint pain occurs from stiff muscles and lack of movement. You can easily treat sedentary-related joint pain by getting up and moving daily around your home instead of sitting most of the time. You need to be exercising at a minimum of 30 minutes a day. Even better, exercise 45-60 minutes daily, even if it’s just gentle walking. Exercise-related joint pain can even be improved with exercises like stretching and yoga for flexibility.

7. Alkaline Diet

If your diet is full of fast food, junk food, acidic foods like dairy and meat, or you drink a lot of caffeine and eat a great deal of sugar, no amount of other treatments will work. Your joint pain might just be a direct reflection of all the inflammation going on in your body. Luckily, there’s an easy solution that just requires you to change what’s on your plate a little. Sugar and dairy are highly acidic are are two of the worst causes of joint pain, along with all processed food and junk food. First, get rid of all sources of those. Replace those foods with fresh fruits and vegetables, along with quality fats like nuts, seeds, olive oil, coconut oil, and fish. Be sure you’re getting in plenty of veggies daily, and drink water before you pick up that next cup of coffee!

8. Turmeric

Turmeric is a root much like ginger, but much more potent. You might know it by the bright yellow color it brings to curry powder, where it is the star ingredient. Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory and it’s wonderful for relieving joint pain, headaches, the common cold or flu, and even stomach pains. You can buy it as a root and grate it into foods, or you can take it as a supplement. It’s also available as a spice.

9. Homeopathic Remedies

I’m a big fan of homeopathic remedies, and have found them effective for everything from stomach aches to joint pain, to insomnia. They’re not like a supplement, but instead, they contain natural plant extracts that target a specific cause. They’re also very popular for their effectiveness. I suggest buying one directly targeted at joint pain, such as Hyland’s brand #10, Nat. Phos. 6X, which is a formula specifically for joint pain and even rheumatoid arthritis. You can find it here and learn more: iherb.com

10. Magnesium

Magnesium is one of my favorite supplements that is good for so many things. It can help with nervous system support to conquer anxiety, help relieve insomnia and depression, can treat constipation, and it’s also highly effective for treating joint pain. Buy a magnesium supplement that contains multiple types of magnesium for the best results and take around 400 milligrams daily to start. This is now being prescribed by many doctors today for women, just like Vitamin D. You can buy it as a powder or in a pill form. I like Now brand Magnesium Caps, which you can find here: iherb.com.

11. Epsom Salt Baths

Many athletes are fans of epsom salts to treat joint pain, and I have to say, they do work extremely well for so many things. Epsom salts are a specific form of magnesium-based salts, and they target detoxification of the body, along with inflammation. For the best effects, take a bath in Epsom salts with around 1 cup of salts per tub of water. It’s best to soak in this for at least 30 minutes. Be aware you might be a little sleepy when you get out. The magnesium is highly relaxing, so it can also help you sleep. You can also opt to use the salts as an entire body exfoliant, which is effective as well. Just scrub the salts on with a cloth over your whole body and rinse. You can find epsom salts at any drug store or health food store. Many grocery stores also carry it as well, and you’ll find it in the bath and beauty section, not the salt aisle!

Joint pain is something that can get in the way of life on a number of levels. It affects everything from your energy to your sleep, mood, and even your weight if you can’t move around a lot.
